On Social Media and Time Well Spent

I enjoy social media, at least most of the time.

Bluesky’s freshness and kindness have been a pleasant surprise.

X and LinkedIn keep me connected to interesting minds and opportunities. I get value out of each one.

But here’s my reality: client work and creative projects like I Need That matter WAY more to me than feeding algorithms.

Those platforms demand constant presence.

Scan hundreds of posts daily.

Share.

Engage.

Re-engage promptly.

Repeat endlessly.

The top influencer-consultants clearly invest enormous time maintaining their visibility.

I see their hustle. I respect it. But I can’t match it.

Not won’t.

I really can’t.

Because when I look at my day, I have to make a choice.

I choose:

  • Diving deep with clients I love, who entrust me with their products’ success
  • Creating lasting content that shares what I’ve learned
  • Being fully present for family, for hours every day
  • Building something meaningful with my own business

That stuff demands a LOT of time, and so does social media.

You can’t do both at a high level. Pretend all you want, but something is gonna suffer.

The algorithms probably don’t love my choice. My reach will be punished. But I’m at peace with that.

To those crushing it on social — I hugely appreciate your work. You’ve mastered something remarkable. I’m in awe of you, really, and how somehow you’ve found your balance. (You have, right?)

I’ll keep showing up here and there, sharing thoughts, making connections.

You just won’t ever see me compete super hard for algo attention. My best energy goes to work that will long outlive the next viral moment.

What deserves your best focus?

Is it getting it consistently?

P.S. The irony of sharing this on social media isn’t lost on me. 🤔 But sometimes it’s worth taking a moment to explain where you stand.
